At Preparatory School level, our approach to sport focuses on a programme that facilitates the acquisition of fundamental movement skills, the building of motor skills and the development of sport-specific skills. This approach translates into physical literacy, and provides our students with a tool kit of skills and habits that can be used to play any sport. Our vision is to cultivate a love for sport, thereby promoting life-long physical activity.
In parallel to this approach is our ‘Pathway to Excellence’ programme. Unique to St Cyprian’s School, its purpose is early identification, cultivation and honing of specific talent within the sporting codes. This provides a pathway to excellence for students to compete at the highest level at appropriate periods in their lives. The ‘Pathway to Excellence Programme’ is supported by established structures and systems, the employment of code-specific specialist coaches and the establishment of discrete ‘Sport Academies’ for athletics, hockey, soccer and tennis.
The approach to music in the Foundation Phase is one designed to nurture the natural love that children have for music through joyous singing, movement activities and the playing of Orff instruments. In addition, there are weekly class music lessons, as well as the opportunity to sing in the Choir, play in Orff or recorder groups and to start individual music lessons.
Class music continues in the Intermediate Phase. Students enthusiastically hone skills to express themselves musically on their chosen instruments. One-on-one tuition is offered on orchestral instruments, guitar and voice. The opportunities for group music making are diverse, and include:
The annual St Cyprian’s School Eisteddfod provides one of many opportunities for the students to showcase their musical skills.
